“New and improved.” The death knell for a good product.
June 9, 2006
Y’all remember New Coke, right? That was a debacle that sent Coke shares wayyy down. And forced Coke to say ‘uncle’ and put our dearly beloved back on the shelves in a classic way.
Et tu, Thermafuse?
For years I used Thermafuse hair products www.thermafuse.com/, a company based in Kannapolis, NC. Their products were regional and couldn’t be found nationally. But that little ole Suth’un company had the best products on the market. Basic Revolution moisturizing shampoo and conditioner were the best ever. No matter what I tried, I always came back to them because nothing compared. Intense! Rebuild Styling Gel was great for our Suth’un humidity because it was light and strong; held well and didn’t get sticky in the heat. Basic Revolution Nuage’ Ultimate Hold Hair Spray went on a little wet, but dried quickly and could hold a ‘do in any ole hurricane that happened along the coast. I worshipped at the altar of Thermafuse. I talked it up every chance I got. I had gallon jugs of the stuff shipped to me in California (thank you, Red) and their astringent could soothe any itchies.
I dropped by Red’s last week for a supply of products since I’m going to California for a month and wanted to stock up. I couldn’t find my usual products. There were Thermafuse products in ugly, awkward packaging, but not my babies. Chico helped me because the stuff was on glass shelves over my head. He gave me something and I inquired about the packaging which he said they’d changed. We chatted a bit more because I always forget that they don’t take debit cards and I didn’t have a check with me. Since he’s seen my face for years, he told me it was okay and I could pay for it later. I thought that was mighty neighborly of him and was going to mail a check when I got home; of course I didn’t.
I tried the new shampoo that night. It felt vaguely the same but had a mint overture, perhaps peppermint, that I could feel and smell. And smell. Okay, not the original, but not bad. But the ugly blue/brown packaging was about as ugly to me as the lime green “new” packaging of my precious Ban deodorant and certainly didn’t match my decor. I’m very resistant to ugly packaging; prefer white. When I opened the gel, I was really suspicious because the name was different, the color and texture was different, and the fragrance was overpowering. OMFG. Awful. The scent didn’t go away; it lingered and lingered and I had to finally wash my hair again to get rid of it. I threw that boy back in the bag to return toute de suite. I was not happy.
So yesterday I traipsed back to Red’s with a new checkbook and the stinky Esculpt gel. Red was apologetic about the product change and was obviously disappointed himself. He told me that noone liked the new products and they weren’t buying them. He complained to Thermafuse, but didn’t get a satisfactory response. He said he’d been selling the products for 22 years and now they decided they wanted to compete with Paul Mitchell, Matrix, et.al…the big boys’ fancy schmancy haircare lines. I guess after 22 years, you have to jazz your products up; no matter what your customers like. Because old, loyal customers don’t count; it’s the new ones who do. If it ain’t broke, it will be. Anyway, Red recommended some Paul Mitchell gel as he had with his other customers. Half the price of the new Thermafuse. Can’t possibly be worse than the new Thermafuse. Not stinky like the new Thermafuse. But it won’t have a loyal customer like the old Thermafuse.

Heh. My ex mil has used Thermafuse before. But then, she’s tried every product under the sun. She’s like that.
So did you write to the Thermafuse folks and give them a link to your blog?
I really hate it when companies change their products. For no good reason.
Good luck in your search for a replacement.

I hate when they change products and make them new and improved. I used to the love the smell of Agree shampoo and conditioner, they came out with new and improved Agree and it was horrible. *Sigh* It was like the new coke for hair!

I too loved the old brand of Thermafuse and so did my clients. But the new line is unbelievalbe. The fragrance is wonderful. People ask me all the time what perfume do I have on. My clients love the smell as well and knowing that now the new line repairs damage to their hair every time they use a blow dryer, flat iron or any heat, I just can’t keep it on my shelves. It’s the first time I’ve had a line in my salon that people come in just to buy the product again and again. So for all the people who blow dry their hair, I say thank you Thermafuse for keeping our hair healthy.
Any shampoo or styling product that has a fragrance that lingers after two or three days is wrong. There is nothing subtle about the new formula’s fragrance. The styling product used to have a clean feel to it, but now it’s a gloppy mess that feels nasty. The product has always been great for damaged hair. I’d say that Thermafuse products were the best that I’ve ever used…and I’ve used and tried a lot of them. I traveled miles to buy their products. I’ve had their products shipped cross-country when I couldn’t find them in California. I’ve bought their products buy the gallon. I no longer buy Thermafuse products. Sadly, sometimes, a good thing is better left alone. ~Phoebe

I don’t know what all the fuss is about the new Thermafuse… I have had it in my salon for 2 months and can’t keep it on my shelves.. Clients hair has never felt so good.. The secret is in the product and the heat. I have never had my entire salon on-board with a product line before this came along.. Perhaps the people that are disappointed in the new product should make sure they are using it properly. As a salon owner for 25 years I have been upset when companies would change my best selling product, but it was always more upsetting to find it in a grocery store or retail outlet.. Thermafuse is dedicated to professionalism and will not sell out to the big chains.. That to me is worth everything. My clients only want products that can only be purchased in a salon..I say give it another try.. When I walk into my salon, it smells fresh and clean. That is because my stylists are using Thremafuse on the clients.

I have used Thermafuse liquid mousse for years and years and am very upset that it’s no longer available. Nothing else I’ve tried is like that product. I have thinkstraight hair that’s hard to manage and this stuff worked great and didn’t gum up my hair. I used to buy this in gallons and I feel the same as some of you! Why won’t companies just leave a good product alone? I hate smelly products that compete with my fragrance or my surroundings!
I’m still searching the stores for something similar, but so far no luck! And my hair looks awful now. I can’t believe what a difference this product makes in my hair. I’d pay whatever they wanted to charge for it, as probably others would too. Oh well, their loss and ours!

Phoebe is a loon who obviously doesn’t like change. I have retailed ThermaFuse in my salon for all of 2008, and I am set to have an all time retail sales high of a little more than $50,000 for this year. I can not keep it on my shelves. I literally have to order cases of it every week. My clients love the fragrance, and most importantly, the performance. My client’s hair is now shiny, smooth and sexy, and they thank me every time they come in. Maybe Phoebe should trot on down to her local Piggly Wiggly and grab a bottle of Suave. They haven’t changed that in 30 years!!
Jim Sugar, it isn’t nice to call people names. There are other ThermaFuse products that I still like and still use. I don’t want to use a hair product that overpowers my perfume if I choose to wear one. Am I not entitled to my opinion about the new formulations for the products? What a boring world we’d have if everyone liked the same things. I’m glad you have a product in your salon that does so well; I hope your sales double next year. And about that Suave…how do you know the formula hasn’t changed for 30 years? Sadly, there isn’t a Pig nearby so that I can check it out. Cheers, Phoebe

thermafuse is not much different than any other product out there. some of it is better than others, some not, but it will never be really “successful” with the people who “run” the company based on their own desires and their “consultants” input, with little or no concern for their customers.
Thermafuse had an excellent styling gel, the best I’ve ever used. Their shampoo was also first class. I don’t say any of this lightly as I’ve used many products and it’s exciting to find one that’s worthy of comment. You’re so right; consultants don’t always know best. Overpowering fragrance and just-plain-ole-ugly packaging both will send a person to another product. Sad to ruin an excellent product. ~Phoebe

What happened to the Original Agree Shampoo and Conditioner? I have seen a few Agree shampoos for sale but they are not the original! Does anybody know?! Thanks!
